Theme Essential Question: How can you use numerical and algebraic expressions, equations, and inequalitites to solve real life mathematical problems?
Essential Questions:
Can students use variables and algebraic expressions to solve problems?
Standards
6.EE.6 Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem; understand that a variable can represent an unknown number, or, depending on the purpose at hand, any number in a specified set.
Objectives
Students will use algebraic expressions to solve problems.

The process of translating between mathematical phrases and symbolic notation will also assist students in the writing of equations/inequalities for a situation. This process should go both ways; Students should be able to write a mathematical phrase for an expression. Additionally, the writing of expressions from a situation or story does not come naturally for many students. A strategy for assisting with this is to give students an expression and ask them to come up with the situation/story that the expression could be referencing. When working with expressions, provide situations in which the information is not limited to the set of positive whole numbers but includes rational numbers. This is a good way to practice fractional numbers and negative numbers. Background Information Recommended: For a quick overview of the standard(s) to be addressed in this lesson, see Arizona’s Content Standards Reference Materials.
Mathematical Practices 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Highly Recommended: The Illustrative Mathematics Project offers guidance to states, assessment consortia, testing companies, and curriculum developers by illustrating the range and types of mathematical work that students will experience in a faithful implementation of the Common Core State Standards. The website features a clickable version of the Common Core in mathematics and the first round of "illustrations" of specific standards with associated classroom tasks and solutions.
